Aboriginal Leadership Team

There’s about 25 kids from various year cohorts, all from Aboriginal descendants. All members have chosen to partake in the Aboriginal Leadership Team.

The teacher who runs the roll call class is Lucy Pulham, an art teacher here at Albion Park High. The aim of creating the Leadership Team was so that Aboriginal students could be involved in important events occurring at the school such as; building the yarning circle, helping run NADOC week and reconciliation week.

Individuals felt that there were a large amount of diverse leadership teams in primary school, while high school had a limited selection. As a result of this, teachers wanted to create a team where kids could have a voice and have their opinions on topics heard.

One of the things that students have already done was design a new merit award, called “Deadly Awards” e.g Deadly attendance, deadly creative arts and deadly sports. So there will be new merits for aboriginal students that will be received at the awards ceremonies. Members are in charge of lots of initiatives within the school giving them a chance to be a leader.

How are the members chosen? Aboriginal students got offered to join, it was up to them if they joined or not, and these are students from all year groups.

What is a Deadly Merit? An award that specifically recognizes the success and achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students at APHS.

Who nominates for this award? All staff will select one student for each year group they

teach. It is the same process we complete every semester using Sentral, navigating through Wellbeing and the Merit Assembly tab. Staff will still nominate two students for every class they teach. In addition, staff will now select one Aboriginal student per year group. The Aboriginal Education team will also nominate students for extracurricular activities.

Lucy Pulham and Tharje O’Brien designed the merit and art.

What are the categories?
