My mum had an angry expression plastered to her face. I continued looking out the window to try and find out where we were going but I had no success. I leaned back in my seat.
As I sat in the car next to my mom, my heart felt heavy with a mix of emotions. We had just left my dad, and everything felt so uncertain. The road seemed to stretch endlessly before us, mirroring the unknown path that lay ahead. Finally, we arrived at a different house, and I noticed a man standing outside. My mom gently took my hand and led me out of the car. "Charlie, this is Chris," she said, her voice filled with a hint of nervousness. I looked up at him, feeling a bit shy. "Hi, Chris," I managed to say, trying to hide my unease. Chris looked down at me with a distant expression, his eyes lacking warmth. "Hey," he replied curtly, his tone lacking the warmth I had hoped for. I couldn't help but feel a pang of disappointment. I had imagined a stepdad who would be kind and welcoming, but Chris seemed different.
