Naidoc Week - 2022 - Get up, Stand up and Show up!

On Wednesday 20/7, APHS held a NAIDOC week assembly to celebrate Aboriginal culture.

This was the speech and video composed by Year 8 student, Zara Jones, delivered on assembly.

Congratulations on your amazing effort Zara!

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories. During this week we participate in celebrating the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. The theme this year is Get up, stand up, show up. Our Aboriginal history shows we always stand up and show up to create positive change in our country. We fight for our rights and we support our mob. This year will be a very important year for Aboriginal people, because the government has respected the Uluru Statement of the Heart and is going to ensure that we have Aboriginal voices guiding the laws created by parliament. It was only through standing up and showing up that we got the politicians to listen and make this change. We must get up, stand up and show up for what we believe in. This even applies to our own school. We should always be proud of our culture, heritage and stand up to support each other. Today in period 1, we will watch a short film that I have created. The film is a collection of students and staff talking about NAIDOC Week and their culture. Please take this time to reflect on what NAIDOC means to you.
