On Wednesday the 26th of July, two year 9 students Tayla Pegler and Jordyn-Summa Spoked competed in the legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition that took place at Oxley College. The girls presented amazing prepared speeches, Taylas being titled “Unrealistic Schooling Standards” where she talked about the expectations teachers, parents and overall adults set for students and how they negatively affect a students well being, social life and mental health.Jordyns was titled “Back To The Basics” in which she discussed the dangers that organic and natural hygiene products cause to humans and the environment, she then stated the fact that synthetic formulas are better for society and the world. The competition consisted of two sections, a prepared section which the girls presented their speeches talked about above and then an impromptu section where they were taken into a room and told a broad and metaphorical topic which was “A Fork In The Road” which they had 5 minutes to prepare for their 2 minute impromptu speeches. Tayla interpreted this topic as a choice between two decisions, these two decisions she discussed was the choice between two sports and how decisions may be challenging. Jordyn spoke about how everyone runs into obstacles in life tht act as a fork in the road and as a result society shouldn’t judge people because you never know what obstacle they have fun into or what their fork in the road is. Other schools from the Illawarra also competed, some other schools included llawarra sports high, Corpus Christi, kanahooka and Oxley collage. Tayla and Jordyn both did excellent jobs representing our school for the English department!
