Robot Takeover? Will ChatGPT spell the end to online learning?

In the bustling world of technology and innovation, a groundbreaking revolution has taken place with the emergence of ChatGPT. ChatGPT, powered by OpenAI's cutting-edge GPT-3.5 architecture, has transformed the way we interact and communicate with machines. As an advanced language model, ChatGPT possesses an extraordinary ability to understand, generate, and respond to human language. Let us delve into the intricacies of this remarkable creation that has sparked awe and excitement among users worldwide.

ChatGPT stands at the forefront of artificial intelligence, epitomising the progress made in natural language processing. Trained on a vast corpus of diverse texts, it has acquired an impressive understanding of grammar, syntax, and semantics, empowering it to converse fluently across a wide range of topics. This comprehensive knowledge enables ChatGPT to engage in meaningful conversations, answer questions, provide assistance, and even express creativity through its responses

One of ChatGPT's most remarkable features lies in its adaptability. It can swiftly adjust its responses based on context, allowing for a dynamic and personalised conversational experience. Whether discussing scientific concepts, historical events, or even pop culture phenomena, ChatGPT remains versatile and adept at providing accurate and relevant information. It continually learns and evolves, incorporating new knowledge to enhance its responses over time.

You may not have guessed it…but this was an article made by ChatGPT.

I put in the prompt ‘introduce yourself in a school article’. You give the AI a question, request or prompt and ChatGPT will provide an answer that is both easy to comprehend and informative. Each and every day, many different AI platforms are developing more knowledge and understanding, this alarming rate can allow for some amazing and terrible feats. If I were given an assignment by my teacher to write a 600 word essay on why pollution is affecting wildlife across the globe, I could simply ask ChatGPT ‘Write me a 600 word essay about pollution affecting wildlife’, and it could write me a 600 word essay on pollution in less than 10 seconds opposed to the several hours, even days, it would take to complete an essay. Completing essays in mere seconds can cause conflicting opinions on online learning, so we decided to ask students and teachers of our school on this matter.

Let's find out how pressing the problem is!!

Do you believe that ChatGPT is impacting childrens’ abilities to learn?

Students:

“I believe that chatGPT is affecting how children react to situations, and how they interact with the world.”

“Yes, yes it does. If kids use this unethically, they won’t know how to structure their sentences or write stories themselves. AI Generators will definitely impact student’s grammar and spelling.”

Teachers:

“Yes, possibly in good ways and bad ways.”

“I believe that chat GPT definitely has the potential to impact the way that students access information, and I think it is a tool that we really need to consider when assessing students. I do believe that it is not necessarily about rejecting Chapt GPT, but more about learning how to work with it and use it to both the student’s and teacher’s advantage.”

What are your personal thoughts on ChatGPT?

Students:

“ChatGPT is going to effect more of the student body in the future, due to the amount of people using it to write essays, ummmmmmmmmmmmm ya”

Teachers:

“I believe it is a good tool to generate example text, but students shouldn't be using it to complete essays.”

“Let’s use it ethically, and approach it as we do with all technology - as a tool to help us…once we understand how that looks.” Mr Kilborn

“I am concerned about beginning teachers using ChatGPT by using AI to produce work samples, thus reducing their capacity to develop essential skills.” Ms Williams
