Sorry day is a nation wide commemoration day that is held on May 26th. It reflects on the culture, stories, legends, heritage, and community that was lost through the stolen generation in a time where Australia was ruled by an unfair government system and white supremacy at its peak. It is very important to acknowledge our past errors as the pain and trauma from members of the stolen generation are still present and can not be undone. For sorry day this year, Albion Park High School held a ceremony that included candle burning, didgeridoo playing and speeches from a local Elder, Aunty Lindy Lawler. She gave a very personal and moving speech; “It brought back a lot of memories for me. Me and my twin sister are survivors of the Stolen Generations.
It wasn’t easy for us because you lose your culture. My grandkids need to know
these things. All kids need to know these things. Today was wonderful, all the
young people coming up to greet you. I feel very welcome, the hospitality is nice.” We also had an afternoon tea with foods cooked and provided by the hospitality students, as well as an open area for members of various schools and immunities could sit down or wander around as well as talking to others about their own personal stories, or anything on their mind. It was an evening to reconcile and commemorate all that was lost, and to look forward to the future with a new seed of growth and the love and remembrance to be built on the ground of the Indigenous people.
