Review by Lincoln Bennett
Summary
The Hobbit is about…. Well, the Hobbit is an interesting story. A story of Dragons and kingdoms, well that's what this book is about a Dragon and a Kingdom. The Hobbit is what the name suggests, a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo Baggins is one of the most respectable Hobbits, a Hobbit with little to no adventure, never did anything unexpected and you could always tell what a Baggins would say without asking. Until, one night he was struck with adventure as 13 Dwarves Dwalin, Balin, Kili, Fili, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, and their King Thorin Oakenshield. There was also a Wizard named Gandalf who appeared at his doorstep calling for Bilbo's aid to join them on a dangerous quest to take back their Kingdom under the mountain from the fire breathing dragon “Smaug”.
My Thoughts
Throughout reading this book a torrent of emotions flew trough me. As I read this book I kept getting extremely engaged into the story. From its amazing plot points and interesting storyline. As I was reading this book many emotions popped up. Emotions of sadness, emotions of amazement, emotions of shock etc. What I’m trying to say, is that this book is definitely worth reading. Not only does it start an amazing world of books by Tolkien it begins the start of one of the most popular fanbases. This book was such an amazing journey. I recommend it to anyone Tolkien fan or not.
Strengths and Weaknesses
There isn’t such a thing as a perfect book, so let me speak about the weakness or the cons about this book.
First off, if you’re wanting to read this book because of the movies that were made just to let you know the movie is quite inaccurate in some ways. For example, the character Tauriel played by Evangeline Lilly was entirely made up for the film and is not even mentioned in the book at all. Which is actually a good thing in my opinion.
Ok so what’s wrong with this book. First off, the book is quite wholesome so if you’re looking for a darker and scarier Tolkien book or books, I recommend its predecessor Lord of the Rings, Tolkien’s most famous work. Another problem I faced reading the book was that sometimes its chapters felt short. Some great parts of the book were only one chapter long which could have lasted a bit longer.
Now for the books strengths. This book is extremely good. Its interesting, it’s sad, it intrigues the reader and it makes you want to continue it to the end. This book is the start of something great. Not only does it set up the Lord of the Rings trilogy of books, it started Tolkien’s Career of being an author. Some of the scenes in this book are amazing. Just so much description and amazing writing techniques. Every night I read one chapter from this book till I finished it, and it was the best part of my day.
My Recommendation
I recommend this book to not only Tolkien fans but to book readers in general. No matter what standpoint you come from, this book is a great read for anyone. I’d also recommend listening to an audiobook while reading and I highly recommend Jan Kameníks free audio book on Spotify. It made the experience a lot more enjoyable. I give this book a 9/10 and after reading it if you liked it I recommend reading Lord Of The Rings next.
