Ms Hoole's Reading Recommendation:

Girls in Boys' Cars by Felicity Castagna

Feeling you cannot live up to your parent's expectations? Want to be seen by boys as more than just an object? Then you will empathise with Rosa and Asheeka, the protagonists of Girls in Boys' Cars. Frustrated at their lives, Asheeka steals her boyfriend, Arnold's, car and the girls set out on a road trip that will cause them to do things that they never thought possible; changing their lives forever.

Girls in Boys' Cars is real in its exploration of pressures experiences by young women, including the complications of young adult friendship, the pressures of social media, relationships with parents and boyfriends, and the consequences of poor choices. All this is set against the backdrop of fires in rural Australia as these city girls travel through country NSW.

Felicity Castagna's debut novel has won the Prime Minister's Award for Young Adult Literature and is a finalist for the Miles Franklin and Children's Book Council of Australia Elder's Book category in 2022.
